New Federal Standard to Improve Safety of Infant Slings Takes Effect
WASHINGTON, D.C. – If you, or anyone you know, uses an infant sling carrier, a new federal standard aimed at making sling carriers safer is now in effect. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) approved the standard to prevent deaths and injuries to young children. The new standard applies to any infant sling carrier manufactured or imported after January 30th 2018.
What are the new rules?
Among other things, all infant slings must have permanently attached warning labels and come with instructions, like illustrated diagrams, to show the proper position of a child in the sling. Warning labels must include statements about:
- the suffocation hazards posed by slings and prevention measures,
- the hazards of children falling out of slings, and
- a reminder for caregivers to check the buckles, snaps, rings and other hardware to make sure no parts are broken.
The mandatory standard also requires sling carriers to:
- Be able to carry up to three times the manufacturer’s maximum recommended weight,
- Be more durable to avoid seam separations, fabric tears, breakage, etc., and
- Be able to keep the child being carried from falling out of the sling during normal use.
What the Data Show
Between January 2003 and September 2016, 159 incidents were reported to CPSC involving sling carriers, including 17 deaths and 67 injuries to infants during use of the product.
CPSC Safety Tips for Using Infant Sling Carriers
Make sure you know how to prevent deaths and injuries when using sling carrier
- Make sure the infant’s face is not covered and is visible at all times to the sling’s wearer.
- If nursing the baby in a sling, change the baby’s position after feeding so the baby’s head is facing up and is clear of the sling and the mother’s body.
- It is so important to frequently check the baby in a sling, always making sure nothing is blocking baby’s nose and mouth and baby’s chin is away from its chest.

Description:
This recall involves Alstyle infant bodysuits. The 100% cotton, short-sleeved bodysuits were sold in black, blue, pink and white. They have a lap shoulder construction with three-snap closure at the crotch. The bodysuits were sold in sizes 6M, 12M and 18M. “Alstyle” and “Made in Mexico” are printed on the neck label and “CAT – # – J” is printed on a white label sewn into the left inside seam.
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received one report of snaps detaching from the bodysuit. No injuries have been reported.
Sold At: Wholesale and screen printers nationwide and online at www.alstyle.com from August 2015 through September 2017 for between $2.15 and $2.25.

Vornado Air Recalls Cribside Space Heaters Due to Fire and Burn Hazards
Recall Summary
Name of Product: Sunny CS (cribside) nursery space heaters
Hazard: A broken motor mount can allow the electric heating element to come in contact with the interior plastic materials and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards.
Remedy: Replace
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled space heaters, unplug them and contact Vornado for instructions on how to receive a free replacement unit, including free shipping.

Description
This recall involves Vornado Sunny CS (cribside) model EH1-0090 electric space heaters. They were sold in white with an accent of melon and gray colors. The heaters measure approximately 12 inches high, 8 inches deep and 11 inches at the base. The controls are mounted in a soft touch panel on the top of the unit with a multi-color display in the center of the control panel. “Vornadobaby” is printed on the side of the heater. The Vornado logo is printed on the front center of the unit. The model/type “SUNNY CS EH1-0090” and serial number are printed on a silver decal on the bottom of the unit under the elastic cord wrap. The recalled heaters have the numbers 1 and 7 as the fourth and fifth digits of the serial number (XXX17-XXXXXX).
Incidents/Injuries: Vornado has received five reports of the electric heaters catching on fire. No injuries or property damage have been reported.
Sold At: Bed Bath & Beyond, buybuy Baby and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Target.com, Vornado.com and other websites from October 2017 through December 2017 for about $100.

Description:
This recall involves Vtech Shake and Sing Elephant rattle with model number 80-184800. The rattle has a purple elephant with yellow and blue ears at one end and a black and white plastic teething ring at the other end. VTech is stamped on the elephant. The rattle is about seven inches long and the number 1848 is printed on the back of the rattle adjacent to the battery door. The rattle sings when a button is switched on.
Incidents/Injuries: Vtech has received five reports of the ears breaking off of the rattle. No injuries have been reported.
Sold At: Walmart, Kmart, Meijer, Mills Fleet Farm, Seventh Avenue, and online at Amazon.com and zulily.comfrom November 2015 through November 2017 for about $8.
