Whereas the week of April 2-8, 2018 is National Public Health Week, and the theme is Healthy Missouri 2030: Be and Advocate for Public Health;
Whereas since 1996, the Amerian Public Helaht Association through its sponsorship of National Public Health Week, has educated the public, policymakers and pujblic health professional about the issues important to improving the public's health;
Whereas the home and neighborhood can impact an individual's health and opportunities to engage in healthy behaviors;
Whereas public health professionals help communities prevent, prepare for, withstand, and recover from the impact of a full range of health threats, including emerging diseases, natural disasters and disasters caused by human activity.
Whereas public health action, together with scientific and technologic advances, have played a major role in reducing and in some cases eliminating the spread of infection diseases, and in establishing today's disease surveillance and control systems.

Now, therefore, we the Andrew County Commission, by virtue of the authority vested in us by the laws of Missouri, do hereby proclaim the week of April 2-8, 2018, ad National Public Health Week 2018 in Andrew County Missouri and call upon the people of Andrew County to observe this week by helping our families, friends, neighbors, co-workers and leaders better understand the value of public health and supporting great opportunities to adopt preventive lifestyle habits in light of this year's theme, "Healthy Missour 2030: Be and Advocate for Public Health."

The Sisters of St. Francis are pleased to announce that the Shared Blessings Community Garden will be ready soon for another year!
Plots are being prepared for our guest gardeners to use. This year there are four raised bed gardens available for less physically able gardeners.
Anyone who has a desire to garden but not enough space, may apply for a 10 X 10 garden plot free of charge. Seeds, tools and garden kneelers are available on site, if desired. Volunteers will help to wee and water. All plots are given out on a First come, first serve basis!
As before, extra space is being planted in order to supply fresh produce to the Senior Center and the Andrew County Ministries Food Pantry, and other organizations and needy individuals. Additional volunteers are needed.

The Andrew County Health Department would like to remind you anyone can and should report suspected child abuse ore neglect. Reporting child abuse and neglect is everyone's responsibility. If you think a child is being mistreated, take immediate action.

Error on the side of over-reporting. If you have the thought, "Maybe I should call . . . " - DO! Not all calls to the hotline are determined to be abuse/neglect. However, the Children's Division can often provide services and assistance that can help families prevent abuse.
The trauma of child abuse or neglect has been associated with increased risk of depression and suicide attempts, substance abuse, developmental disabilities and learning problems, social problems with other children and with adults, teen pregnancy, lack of success in school, and chronic illnesses, including heart disease, cancer and lung disease, among others.

The Andrew County Health Department commends the Andrew County Commissioners on their recent adoption of a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) to protect the health of Andrew County citizens.
